Brighton and Hove Albion’s award-winning £93million Amex stadium could play host to international rugby at the 2015 World Cup.
The 27,000 seater stadia has made its way onto a 17 name strong shortlist alongside a string of famous rugby venues, including Twickenham, Gloucester’s Kingsholme and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
Other football grounds have also been included, with Wembley, Southampton’s St Mary’s on the list alongside Bristol City’s Ashton Gate, Derby County’s Pride Park, Coventry City’s Ricoh Arena, Stadium MK and Elland Road. Others include Old Trafford, Newcastle United’s St James’ Park, Sunderland’s Stadium of Light and Villa Park in Birmingham.
Not included however, is Leicester Tigers’ Welford Road stronghold, despite it being the country’s biggest club rugby ground, although the more modern King Power Stadium in the same city is on the list.
The final list of 10 to 12 venues will be announced early next year.
