Omar Bugiel scored twice as Worthing Football Club moved up to third in the Ryman League South Division with a 3-0 win over Corinthian Casuals this evening.
Rebels started the day fifth, with Casuals in fourth, and Bugiel struck on 45 and 76 minutes before Lloyd Dawes added a late third, after the visitors had missed a 39th-minute penalty.
Rebels’ Matt Piper got back to deny Emmanuel Akokhia from Cherno Mendy’s cross on seven minutes, before Bugiel’s fizzing shot took a slight deflection and went just wide at the other end two minutes later.
Dawes then skipped past a couple of challenges and spread the play out to Callum Overton on the right. He cut in but shot into the side netting from the edge of the penalty area.
Casuals’ Danny Dudley headed a Niall Wright free kick wide at the far post on 19 minutes, before the visitors should have taken the lead a minute later. Rebels failed to cut out David Hodges’ low cross from the left and the ball fell to Mendy, six yards out, but he lacked composure and blazed over.
Dawes then fired a well-hit 25-yard strike straight at Casuals keeper Danny Bracken at the other end two minutes later.
It was Dawes who had Rebels’ next opportunity as well after 29 minutes. Brannon O’Neill brilliantly lifted the ball over a Casuals defender’s head to find Bugiel, who laid the ball back to Dawes but his wild shot flew well wide.
The visitors were awarded a penalty six minutes before half-time when Mendy went on a mazy run, which was ended when he went down under a Corey Heath challenge just inside the penalty area. However, Akokhia’s spot-kick hit the top of the bar and went over.
Casuals were made to pay for that miss on the stroke of half-time when Rebels broke forward and Harvey Sparks fed Dawes, who stumbled over the ball but it ran through to Bugiel and he clipped home from 12 yards to give the hosts the lead.
Corinthian Casuals made a bright start to the second half and Brandon Johnson had a 20-yard strike saved by Rebels keeper Rikki Banks on 47 minutes. From the resulting corner, Johnson was denied by Banks in a frantic goalmouth scramble before Worthing cleared their lines.
Rebels had a great chance to double their lead on 55 minutes when Bugiel’s flick released Dawes, who burst past three challenges into the penalty area before Bracken stood tall to keep out his shot.
Dawes was denied again by Bracken just past the hour after Bugiel had pulled the ball back from the right, before Overton and Dawes both blazed off target midway through the second period.
Dawes had another opening on 70 minutes but crashed a free kick from the edge of the penalty area just wide, after he had been dragged back.
Rebels eventually doubled their lead on 76 minutes when Bugiel was left unmarked to head home Dawes’ corner.
Dawes then got the goal his persistence deserved five minutes from time when he burst through the middle of Casuals’ defence and his shot squirmed under Bracken before finding the bottom corner.
