WORTHING FC manager Chris White admitted that new striker George Gaskin is pushing for his first start for the club after netting a late equaliser at Leatherhead in Rebels’ 1-1 draw on Saturday.
It was Gaskin’s second goal in three Ryman League Division 1 South substitute appearances since joining from County League Wick and White said: “He’s definitely pushing for a start and would have started on Tuesday at Walton & Hersham if the game went ahead as we were going to play 4-4-2.
“We’ll re-assess the team and formation for Saturday but he’s banging on the door, deserves a chance and will get it soon.”
Gaskin got the equaliser at high-flying Leatherhead with five minutes left when he tapped home after Rebels striker Terry Dodd did just enough to prevent Leatherhead keeper Chico Ramos from collecting John Lansdale’s long ball forward.
Rebels then almost won it but Tom Manton’s turn and shot from 18 yards clipped the top of the bar and went over.
Leatherhead dominated the first half and had twice gone close by the time they took a 26th-minute lead when Chris Boulter headed home Mu Mann’s cross.
Maan, Tommy Hutchings, Jon Boswell and Kevin Terry all missed chances to increase the lead, while Dodd shot straight at Ramos at the other end and Tom Lawley fired well over.
Worthing keeper Tony Di Bernardo kept out a Maan shot early in the second period, before Rebels introduced Gaskin, initially in a 4-5-1 formation, before he later joined Dodd upfront when Worthing went 4-4-2.
Lawley, Mike Huckett and Tony Timms all went close to levelling before Worthing got the late equaliser.
After losing both of their previous games 3-2 in the fifth minute of injury-time, White said: “We started off quite poorly and they dominated the first half.
“After the previous two games we looked a little bit sorry for ourselves but the longer the game went on, the better we got.”
Rebels are now 14th after Tuesdays’ results, while Leatherhead stayed third.
