Worthing United Football Club boss Nigel Geary said he was pulling his hair out with his side’s mixed form after a 5-1 defeat at high-flying Haywards Heath on Saturday.

Mavericks have now conceded 31 times in just ten Southern Combination League Premier Division games this season and 42 in 15 matches in total. On the flip side, Mavericks have found it almost just as easy to score goals and have netted 27 in the league and 33 in total this season.

Their last four results read 5-3, 0-5, 5-1, 1-5 and Geary said: “I’m pulling my hair out and can’t put my finger on our form at the moment.

“Looking at the league table, we’ve conceded 31 in just ten games but we haven’t got bad defenders and it’s up to me to sort it out.

“On Saturday, we came up against a very good side. They’re my favourites to win the league, along with Pagham, and we wanted to keep it tight in the first half and for the pressure to build on them.

“But we gave the ball away when we had good possession and fell behind after just eight minutes.

“We just did all the wrong things in the first half but we’re a young side and this will be something we’ll learn from.”

Heath led 4-0 at half-time with two goals each from Trevor McCreadie and Tom Graves, before Lewis Finney added a fifth midway through the second half.

Substitute Alfie Gritt, on his return from a dislocated toe, netted with a tremendous strike five minutes from time to get a consolation for United.

Mavericks travel to division-lower East Preston in the Peter Bentley Cup tonight (7.30pm).

UNITED: Trigwell; Punter, Callaghan, Marsh, Bromage, Foster, Goldson, Hards, Todd, Rose, Fenelon. Subs: Hasan (Bromage 15), Batchelor (Goldson 55), Gritt (Fenelon 75), Gilmour, Buckland.
