Lancing Football Club enjoyed a 5-3 victory over a spirited Shoreham in their Boxing Day derby clash.

Lancing Football Club enjoyed a 5-3 victory over a spirited Shoreham in their Boxing Day derby clash.

A clinical performance in front of goal from Lancers earned them the three points in the County League Division 1 fixture.

Mussels were made to pay for missing two early opportunities, and it was, inevitably, Lancing who went ahead from the penalty spot on 36 minutes.

Dan Turner was fouled after being picked out by Wayne Joseph, and the midfielder then dusted himself down to slot the spot-kick low into the bottom left corner with Lancers first noteworthy effort.

From then on, Lancing were on top, and, after Will Berry struck the post, Joseph fired in the second on the cusp of the interval to give his team a rather flattering half-time lead.

Darren Boswell also rattled the woodwork as Lancers looked to put the match beyond doubt, but Shoreham refused to lie down and Jono Melia put the match back in the balance on 57 minutes.

That only served to push Lancing up a gear and they quickly restored their two goal buffer through Boswell’s excellent control and finish before the winger then made it 4-1 on 68 minutes after good work from Max Miller.

To their credit, Shoreham never gave up and pulled another goal back through a looping Clay Lamont header 14 minutes from time.

In a frantic finale, Declan Lunn slid home Lancers fifth goal, his second in two games, and although Marc Pulling’s low drive found its way in for Shoreham, it came too late to matter.

Reaction from Mussels’ boss Mark Burt and Lancing manager Martin Gander with a full report in next week’s paper.
