Hutchinson fumes as Bridges pinch a point at United

WE DESERVED more was Worthing United Football Club boss Tobi Hutchinson’s cry after Three Bridges fought back from two goals down to pinch a point on Tuesday evening.

Title-chasing Bridges pulled two goals back in the space of a minute in the final quarter of the match to grab a share on the spoils, the first of which Hutchinson felt should not have stood.

After Sam Schaff and Lucas Mann had put United 2-0, Hutchinson blasted an offside decision going against his team, which allowed the visitors back into the game, before a Jay Head own goal drew them level a minute later.

He said: “It was one of those when you end up feeling like you have lost, but in the cold light of day, we would have taken a point all day long.

“It’s a shame as we played so well. The first 45 minutes was probably our best all season. Second half, we never quite got going and they bombarded us with long balls, but we came through it and it seemed to have calmed down and I thought we’d go on to win comfortably.

“But, once again, we have been robbed by a terrible offside decision.”

Bridges’ scorer Tim Rivers ran through and got in a tangle with a team-mate, who had been in an offside position and obstructing United goalkeeper Grant Christie, before coming out on his feet and putting the ball in the net.

Hutchinson added: “If that isn’t offside, then I don’t know what is. The referee even apologised, but said that if the linesman doesn’t give it then he can’t.

“At 2-0, they were dead and buried, at 2-1 they had a lifeline and then they drilled an effort across the box and Jay unfortunately turned it in.

“Then, in all honesty, we had to hold on. I’m disappointed after having a 2-0 lead not to win, but, then again, I’m delighted with a point as it’s a game that whatever you get is a bonus.”

Schaaf fired United ahead after 30 minutes, as he latched onto Mann’s through ball and slotted home from a tight angle.

Schaaf returned the favour on 70 minutes as he beat his full-back and crossed for Mann to tap home.

Then came the controversy four minutes later, while Head’s own goal saw Bridges draw level on 75 minutes.

United’s match at Arundel on Saturday was postponed owing to a waterlogged pitch.

United are at Lingfield on Saturday.
