Mann’s on fire as United knock Chi for six
United celebrate against Chichester on Saturday
LUCAS Mann fired Worthing United Football Club to their biggest win of the season and out of the County League Division 1 relegation zone on Saturday.
The Mavericks striker crashed four goals to take his tally to 15 for the season as United comprehensively beat bottom-of-the-table Chichester.
United had slipped into the bottom three after their last two league games were postponed, while all their rivals played, but this win took them above Ringmer and up to fourth from bottom.
United had already gone close on a couple of occasions, before they took a 15th-minute lead. George Jones played through Sam Schaaf, who edged the ball past the keeper.
Within a minute, it was 2-0 as Jones beat three players before finding Mann, who finished into the top corner.
Mavericks had to re-adjust after central defender Jim Bywater was forced off with a cut lip but Mann still made it 3-0 from Jones’ pass on 38 minutes.
United then went to sleep and Chichester, who played against the strong wind in the first half, pulled a goal back through Gary Buller on 43 minutes.
Mavericks put the game beyond any doubt two minutes into the second half when Schaaf did well down the right and crossed for Mann to tap home.
Mann got his fourth with 20 minutes left after some excellent play by Alex Thompson, before substitute Dean Gilmour made it 6-1 on 73 minutes after a cleverly-worked free kick with Schaaf.
United boss Tobi Hutchinson was full of praise for his side afterwards and said: “With the teams around us picking up points and our games being called off, it was important to get three points.
“We’ve been working hard in training, so I knew we were in good shape and we played ever so well and got what we deserved.
“We went to sleep just before half-time, which allowed them to get a goal back but our fourth straight after half-time knocked the stuffing out of them.”
Hutchinson also had special praise for Mann and said: “When he gets the bit between his teeth, he can single-handedly destroy teams.
“He played ever so well on Saturday.”
United travel to Arundel, who have climbed to seventh from bottom, on Saturday and Hutchinson said: “They’re in a good bit of form and with the likes of Scott Tipper and Gary Norgate, they’re a dangerous side.
“It’s a massive game for us but both sides like to play football and it should be a good game.”
