Rebels sign stopper Simpson and keep O’Flaherty

Worthing Football Club have signed goalkeeper Jack Simpson from Hassocks and managed to see off interest from Leatherhead for Chris O’Flaherty.

Influential O’Flaherty has turned down an approach from the Ryman Premier side, opting to remain at Woodside Road.

Rebels have also added 21-year-old shot-stopper Simpson, who was number one at County League Hassocks for the past four seasons, to their ranks ahead of their league fixture at Whitstable on Saturday.

Joint boss Kieran Collins said: “He has come over looking to make the step up and come on board to add competition to the two keepers we have already got.

“We will now have to look at the whole squad in view to send a few out on loan to get them 90 minutes.

“Everyone is here for the right reasons, because of the style of football we play. It’s a great coup keeping Chris on board as he’s popular with the players and supporters and Leatherhead is only 20 minutes from where he lives.”

Steve Metcalf and Billy Medlock are both suspended after Saturday’s home match with Walton & Hersham was postponed, and Luke Gedling is injured. It is hoped Freddie Barker and Niko Pinilla’s international clearance will be through.
