Littlehampton Football Club were left counting the cost of a first-half red card as their exit from the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday meant they missed out on hosting Crawley Town in the third round.
Golds suffered a 5-1 defeat at fellow County League Division 2 promotion chasers Newhaven, after having to play the second half with 10 men.
Shay Wiggans was sent off on the stroke of half-time when he fouled an opponent in the penalty area, although Golds felt the player was offside.
Jon Hendrick saved the spot-kick to send the sides in level at the break, although the visitors made the extra man count in the second half.
Lee Robinson and Richard Watton bagged two within five minutes of the restart, before Danny Hand pulled a goal back for the visitors on 55 minutes. It was a late flurry that sealed Newhaven their place against League One side Crawley in the next round as strikes from Robinson, Ebou Jallow and Mark Probert all came within the last nine minutes.
Golds assistant manager Richie Hellen said: “It wasn’t a very good performance, to be honest. They scored three goals in the last 10 minutes, but we were never really at the races. The scoreline doesn’t really reflect the game properly, but we were not at our best.”
