WORTHING United Football Club joint manager Dave Shearing was left a little disappointed not to have taken a point from their 2-1 defeat at Ringmer on Tuesday night – but is still happy with his side’s start to the season.

They have take four points from their first six County League Division 1 games, and although Shearing admitted he was looking for a fifth point this week, he is now relishing a nine-day break without a game.

United will be training hard, as well as allowing time for a few injuries to clear up, while Shearing is still hopeful of adding new personnel.

The latest is striker Liam Baitup, who netted United’s only goal on his debut against Ringmer.

Shearing said: “Liam had a very impressive debut, and has scored everywhere he has been.

“We have had a really tough start against some really good teams.

“Apart from Tuesday, I felt all of our results have been fair. A point from that would have meant five points from our last five games, which would have been good, so we’re a little disappointed on that front.

“We have a good break now, which has come at a good time as we can let injuries clear up and get on the training field ready to go again on September 24.”

Ringmer took the lead through a disputed corner, as Marc Whiteman rose for a free header at the back post on nine minutes.

United, however, rallied and after a fine sweeping move, Baitup turned home Ryan Alexander’s low cross just before the break.

United bossed the second half, although failed to take their chances, and were punished on 65 minutes.

Aaron Phillips sealed the points with the easiest of tap-ins, after Mark Oldroyd made a save after Ringmer broke from midfield, but could only push it into Phillips’ path.

Shearing added: “It was a very, very good game. One we definitely didn’t deserve to lose, and perhaps didn’t deserve to win, but a draw would have been a fair result.”
