WORTHING United Football Club’s three-game winning run came to an end on Tuesday when they exited the Sussex RUR Cup at home to division-higher Loxwood.
United found themselves two goals down just a minute into the second half and, despite Ollie Jones pulling a goal back, the home side were knocked out.
Mavericks boss Nigel Geary was disappointed with the defeat and said: “It’s obviously not pleasing to be knocked out of the cup but the league is our focus now.
“If you had said to me before the game you will lose to Loxwood and beat Uckfield on Saturday, I would have taken it so, hopefully, we can do that and continue our good form in the league.”
Loxwood took the lead on eight minutes through Gary Pritchard and doubled it when Shaun Findlay scored a minute into the second half.
Jones pulled a goal back on 52 minutes to give his side some hope as they searched for an equaliser in the closing stages.
United had a chance to get themselves level after Paul Elliott was brought down and the referee pointed to the spot, with Loxwood reduced to ten men.
However, the Mavericks top-scorer Sam Blundell blazed the spot-kick over the bar and United were knocked out of the Sussex RUR Cup.
