WORTHING Football Club fought back from a goal down to continue their unbeaten start to pre-season with a 5-1 win over Lancing at Woodside Road this afternoon.
Rebels were due to host Croydon but they were unable to field a team, so Lancing stepped in.
Worthing’s summer signing Trevor McCreadie bagged a hat-trick, while Will Hendon and Alex Laing both netted to round off a comprehensive win for Rebels.
Worthing boss Adam Hinshelwood was happy with his side’s performance and said: “It took us a while to get going but, in the end, it was a good work-out.
“There is still plenty for us to work on but this is about where I would have expected us to be at this stage of pre-season.
“We are slowly getting the squad numbers down and I’m really happy with the variety of choice I have in each position.”
The afternoon did not start well for the hosts as they fell behind on ten minutes when Lewis Finney curled a free kick past Jack Fagan in the Worthing goal.
McCreadie drew Worthing level with a right-foot drive into the bottom corner on 16 minutes.
The new recruit then put the hosts ahead on 35 minutes when he controlled a diagonal ball, before rounding Lancing keeper Darren Ford and slotting into an empty net.
Hendon then got his name on the scoresheet to put the hosts 3-1 up with a crisp shot into the roof of the net early in the second half.
Just a minute later, it was four as McCreadie completed his hat-trick after Laing headed the ball into his path.
Laing them got the final goal of the game on 53 minutes with a thunderous drive past Ford.
Lancing boss Richard Whittington said: “It was a hard game, with the opposition being in a higher division than us.
“We had 11 players missing or unavailable, so we had to play a lot of youngsters and some of the reserve team but I was really pleased with those out there today. They worked really hard and gave everything for the club.”
Rebels’ next friendly is at home to Bognor on Monday.
