WORTHING Football Club secured their first league win of the season this afternoon (Monday) as they overcame title-favourites Maidstone 2-0.
Second-half goals from Scott Tipper and substitute Nick Sullivan earned Rebels a deserved victory after a mature and professional display.
A tight first-half saw Jamie Brotherton miss a one-on-one chance and the home side have two penalty appeals turned down as goalkeeper Mansfield was, for the majority, a spectator.
Maidstone improved after the break, but having shut them out for an hour, the introduction of Matt Reece and Scott Kirkwood gave Rebels a more attacking edge.
Within minutes, Reece had won a free-kick and Tipper nodded home a trademark delivery from Chris O’Flaherty.
Mansfield made a fine stop on 86 minutes as he superbly denied Shaun Welford.
While Sullivan sealed the three points in the 89th minute as Tipper poked him through and he calmly finished across goal into the bottom corner.
