WORTHING Football Club suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Corinthian Casuals in Ryman League South Division this evening.
Rebels had the first chance of the game on nine minutes. Youth-team player Jack Barnes, who was making his first-team debut, had a shot saved after a mazy run and George Gaskin’s follow-up was blocked by keeper Danny Bracken.
Worthing keeper Jack Fagan was quick off his line to deny Joel Thompson on 14 minutes, before Rebels’ Will Berry had a header cleared off the line on 19 minutes and Stacey Freeman headed over when George Hayward put the ball back into the box.
Hayward had a shot from a tight angle saved by Bracken on 25 minutes, before Casuals took the lead on 35 minutes. They broke quickly upfield and after Dave Hodges’ shot was blocked, Jamie Byatt brilliantly volleyed into the roof of the net from 15 yards, giving Fagan no chance.
Byatt had a great chance to double Casuals’ lead 11 minutes into the second half but he drilled a shot straight at Fagan from 12 yards after neat build-up play.
Barnes curled one effort just wide from 25 yards and had another well-hit shot comfortably saved by Bracken as Rebels looked for an equaliser.
They almost got it on 75 minutes but Gaskin was denied by Bracken, who tipped his effort from 15 yards over the bar.
That was the closest Rebels got as Casuals saw out the remainder of the game without too much alarm to move out of the relegation places.
