WORTHING Football Club boss Adam Hinshelwood feels the under-21 team that the club set up in the summer is really paying off now.
Bob Paine is the under-21 manager and has guided his Rebels side to fourth place in the Ryman Under-21 League South Division this season, with five wins from their eight games.
Hinshelwood fielded four players who have played for the under-21s in last night’s 2-0 win against East Grinstead. Jaz Rance, Ben Pope and Ryan Quirke all started the game and Jazz Gilbertson went on in the second half.
Jack Barnes, Ryan Wootton, Tom Lyne and Jimmy Punter, who are also part of the under-21 team, have also been involved with first-team squads this season.
Rebels also have a number of other young players in their squad and Hinshelwood said: “These youngsters who are coming in are more than good enough and have never let us down.
“Anyone that wasn’t in favour of the under-21 team has got to be looking at it now and seeing it as a blessing, really. All these boys wouldn’t be available to the club if they were playing elsewhere.
“It’s good that they can come in and are gaining valuable game time and are learning all the time as well.”
Hinshelwood was full of praise for Quirke’s performance against East Grinstead. The midfielder was named man-of-the-match and Rebels’ boss said: “Ryan’s first start was against Burgess Hill last month. He’s one of those lads that when you mention he’s playing in the side, he almost looks a bit shocked but then he goes out there on the pitch and gives a good account of himself.
“On the ball, it’s not a problem. He’s so comfortable and is exciting in the final third. He’s got that little change of pace and little trick where he can go past players. He’s quite exciting and won us the penalty tonight and also set up our goal at Hythe as well.
“The only thing is out of possession and winning the ball back but that’s all stuff we can work on with him. He’s got the technical ability, that’s for sure and is a lad I’ve been really impressed with since he’s come in.
“Hopefully, him and TJ (Richards) and the rest can get more minutes and the more confident they get at this level, the better they’ll become.”
