Consistency the key to ensure safety - Levett

Worthing Raiders head coach Jody Levett believes consistency will be the key to ensure his side retain their National League 2 South status this season.

Raiders moved out of the relegation places on Saturday after running in four tries on the way to a bonus-point 36-33 success over fifth-placed Taunton Titans at Roundstone Lane.

After starting the day second from bottom, Worthing’s win – coupled with defeats for both Barnes and London Irish Wild Geese above them – helped them move up two places and out of the relegation zone on games won.

Having lost ten matches on the spin, before a recent resurgence at home in the past three matches, Levett believes repeating a similar level of performance in the final six games will be crucial in their quest for survival.

Raiders were too strong for Barnstaple and Taunton, while they were more than a match for third-placed Old Elthamians in an enthralling opening hour.

Following a successful mini-run at home, Levett wants to see a high level of performance shown in every game from now until the end of the campaign.

He said: “Our first 60 minutes against Old Elthamians was a great level, then beating Taunton just shows where we can be. It’s just about gaining a level of consistency in these remaining matches.

“Everyone is under pressure for a wide range of reasons at this time of year, so anything is possible in our remaining matches.

“We are there having a crack at everything, especially at home. What will be, will be but if we show the level we have against Taunton and cut out the silly errors, then you got to pleased with the guys and we will give ourselves a great opportunity to ensure our place in this league.”

A dominant opening hour helped Raiders open up a healthy advantage, leading 28-7 just after the interval.

A resurgence from Taunton helped them bag 26 points in the final 20 minutes to almost pull off a remarkable late turnaround.

With victory the most important thing on the day Levett was pleased, although a little concerned about how close it was in the end.

He added: “I was so proud of the guys after getting the bonus-point win. I think we made hard work of it again in the second half, something we are getting good at doing, but I was really proud of getting five points against a team in fifth.”

Raiders now head to second from bottom London Irish Wild Geese for another crucial battle on Saturday, after their win put them in the relegation places.

Levett said: “We go to London Irish Wild Geese, a team in the battle for safety as well, with real confidence and the guys will have great momentum after three good performances at home.”
