WORTHING Raiders Rugby Club’s Jack Maslen had the honour of captaining Harlequins at the World Club 7s event at Twickenham on Sunday.
The top 7s teams from across the world were in action at the tournament and, after three defeats in Group A of the competition on Saturday, Quins went into the Shield section on Sunday, for which Maslen was captain for the day.
Quins reached the final with a 26-19 win over NSW Waratahs as Maslen touched down twice, before they lost 28-14 to Seattle in the final.
In the group stages, a young Quins squad, who also included ex-Raiders loanee Jordan Burns and Charlie Piper, who will be with Worthing this season, had lost 38-19 to Western Province, 33-12 to RC Enisei and 24-7 against New York.
Buenos Aires won the overall competition as they overcame Auckland 26-22 in the final.
Maslen said: “Overall, it was a great weekend. To run out at Twickenham, in Quins’ colours, against the best players in the world was an amazing experience.
“It was a proud moment to captain the team on Sunday and I couldn’t have wished for a better start on the day as I ran in two tries and we reached the Shield final.
“My best moment, though, was a drop goal from the right far touchline, I was quite chuffed with that.
“We were in a tough group on the Saturday.
“New York, who had Carlin Isles, the fastest player in world rugby, were strong, the Russian side were pretty much the Russian 7s side and Western Province were strong as well.”
Maslen now hopes to be in with a chance of selection with Quins for any future 7s tournaments and is action for Wooden Spoon Marauders in a tournament on Sunday.
Raiders head coach Kieron Dawson has been delighted to see Maslen play so well for Quins in the 7s Series and said: “It was probably the best thing for him this summer.
“When he came back from his kidney injury, he lacked a little bit of confidence but for him to play in the 7s and to play so well, means he’ll go into the new season full of confidence.
“We’re going to need him to play well for us, too, as we’re going to need his tries again this season.”
