The 34-year-old took a year out of the game last season but played for Raiders A last week, before completing all 80 minutes on Saturday.

On running out for Raiders again, he said: “I’m a bit older than I was but it’s good to be back with the boys and to get the first couple of games under my belt. I delayed my return a little bit just because of age and injuries but it was nice to be back out there.”

On the season so far, McGowan said: “It’s been a good start and an improvement on the last few seasons but the squad still has a lot more to offer and there’s lots to work on.

“It would be nice to get bonus points but the wins are the most important thing.”

On what the team can achieve this season, he said: “There’s a lot of youngsters in the side and they’ll hopefully develop this season. Guys like Pat White and Jake Lake have got lots to offer but there’s no reason why we can’t aim to finish in the top six. Anything above that would be a bonus.”

On his aims for the season, McGowan said: “I’m just going to look to manage the age and play when I can. It probably won’t be every week but I’ll still be there in the week to help out when needed.”

Head coach Jody Levett said: “It’s always great to have Charlie playing. He’s a guy I played with for many years and is someone that can still come out and produce the goods.

“He has the respect of the team and he did some great things today.”
