Do speed cameras really save lives

I WAS interested to see a council at last questioning the proliferation of speed cameras and asking whether they really do save lives, rather than just being a revenue earner.
Take a look a the camera in Broadwater Road, Worthing, as an example.

Before it was installed I can't recall there being many accidents in this particular location.

And now, all that happens is people slow down through the camera at just below
30mph and then accelerate away to reach near 40mph approaching the top of the bridge.

It's also sited at a spot where you need to be watching the junction on the left rather than on the dashboard to check speed.

I am all for keeping motorists' speed down in dangerous places, and I would much rather see cameras checking average speeds over a given distance rather than speed at just one spot.

I would also like to see far more unmarked police vehicles on patrol catching motorists.

But then surely the "real" agenda is to raise as much money from motorists, and cameras can raise far more revenue than police in cars.
