All the council seats are being contested, and boundary changes mean the make-up of some electoral divisions will be different from the last elections, in 2005.

This time, only one county councillor will be elected for each division.

Conservatives

FORMER Worthing mayor Major Tom Wye is making a first-time bid to become a West Sussex county councillor.

Major Tom, a borough councillor representing Marine ward, is on the list of Tory candidates selected for the county elections on June 4. He will be contesting the new Broadwater division.

Sitting member Clem Stevens will be contesting the new Cissbury division, while borough councillor Roger Oakley is making a first-time bid to become Worthing East's representative.

Steve Waight, a sitting member for the present Goring and Northbrook division, is standing for the new Goring division.

His wife, Nicola Waight, is aiming to make her county debut in the new Durrington and Salvington division.

The new Tarring division is being contested by borough councillor Paul High, in his first county council bid, and another new hopeful, for Worthing Pier, is Paul Yallop, also a borough councillor.

Sitting member John Livermore is seeking to retain his Worthing West seat, while borough councillor John Rogers seeks a first-time county seat in the new Northbrook division.

The Angmering and Findon seat is being contested by sitting member Deborah Urquhart, and sitting member Peter Evans will be contesting East Preston and Ferring.

Worthing council leader Keith Mercer, who represents the present Goring and Northbrook division, is not seeking re-election.

Labour

LABOUR has selected an 18-year-old student, Bren Albiston, to fight the Northbrook division in the June 4 county council elections.

Bren, from Durrington, is studying politics at Brighton's BHASVIC sixth-form college, and he is at the minimum eligible age to be a councillor.

Other Worthing area Labour candidates are: Goring – James Elwood; Worthing West – Eileen Powell; Salvington and Durrington – Peter Barnes; Tarring – Sid Wells; Worthing Pier – Sue Marsh; Ferring – Ed Miller; Cissbury – John Gardiner; Broadwater – John Turley; East Worthing – Ann Saunders; Angmering and Findon – to be confirmed.

Liberal Democrats

TWO prominent Lib Dem members of Worthing Council are seeking election to the county council.

The mayor, Chris Brown,is standing for East Preston and Ferring division, and James Doyle, leader of Worthing's Lib Dem group, is standing for the town's Pier division.

Four other Lib Dem borough councillors are seeking seats.

They are Alan Rice (Broadwater division), former group leader Bob Smytherman (Tarring), Michael Donin (Durrington and Salvington) and Robin Rogers (Northbrook).

Seeking re-election is Irene Richards (East Worthing).

Former Worthing borough councillors John Lovell and Nick John are seeking seats in Rustington and Goring.

Hospital worker Wayne Hoban is standing for the new Cissbury division, and charity worker Yvonne Leonard is aiming to win in Worthing West.

Trevor Richards, who was chief officer of the Worthing and District Community Health Council, is standing for Angmering and Findon division.

UKIP

UKIP are putting forward a teacher and the party's county organiser in the county elections.

Teacher Mike Glennon is a candidate for the Cissbury ward as well as standing as prospective parliamentary candidate for East Worthing and Shoreham.

John Wallace, the West Sussex organiser for UKIP, hopes to win the Durrington and Salvington seat.

He is also standing as a prospective parliamentary candidate for Worthing West.

Candidates are:

Broadwater – Lionel Parsons; Cissbury – Mike Glennon; Durrington and Salvington – John Wallace; Goring and Northbrook – Richard Bater; Tarring – John Harwood; Worthing East – Mick Clark; Worthing Pier – Christopher Woodward; Worthing West – Philip Ruddock; Angmering and Findon – no candidate; East Preston and Ferring – no candidate.

English Democrats – Putting England First

Clive Maltby is standing for election in the East Preston and Ferring ward under the Putting England First banner, as is Henry Powell in Storrington, and Michael Blackfeather in Worthing Pier ward.

County totals

A total of 284 candidates will be contesting the 71 county council seats.

The current constitution of the county council is: Conservatives 47, Liberal Democrats 16, Labour 7.

The election will see 71 councillors being elected instead of the current 70.

This follows changes to some boundaries approved by the Boundary Commission.

It means that there will be a single councillor representing each electoral division.

Previously, there were eight divisions returning two members.

A breakdown of candidates shows that the Conservatives are contesting all 71 seats, with the Liberal Democrats and Labour both contesting 68.

Figures for other parties are: United Kingdom Independence Party (34), the British National Party (20), Green Party (14), English Democrats (4), Justice (1), Peace (1).

There are three Independent candidates.

Vote-counting will start at 2pm on Friday, June 5, and it is hoped that all results will be declared by the late afternoon.

The Worthing count will take place at the Assembly Hall, while Arun's will be held at the Arun Leisure Centre, Bognor Regis.

The result of the election will be known in the afternoon/early evening of Friday, June 5.
