AQUARENA: When size is important

AS a regular lap (length) swimmer at the Aquarena, I am well aware of its defects.
However, it's the best place for serious swimmers within miles.

How so?

Because all the other local pools, for all their modern builds and nice facilities, are 25 metres, while the Aquarena is 33.

In practice, this makes the Aquarena twice
the area of Brighton, Lewes, Littlehampton and Steyning and so has twice the people capacity.

Every time I swim a 25-metre pool, I am stressed, because of sheer crowding.

Lap swimmers are in no hurry for Worthing's 25-metre "new pool".

Our only complaint (and this applies to all Sussex pools) is lap swimming is not given the priority it deserves, if we are to repeat Rebecca Aldington's exploits in Beijing.

During the school holidays, the lanes are so crowded, lap swimmers abandon the pool and the Aquarena management ignores my letters detailing how they have solved the problem in American pools.
