I NOTICED the other day Tesco is about to open its seventh (at the last count) store in the borough of Worthing, at the bottom of South Farm Road.
Who allowed this to go ahead?
What happens now to The Star convenience store opposite, which has been there for over 20 years, and the other shop on the corner of Pavilion Road?
What will the fate of the new International Food Store on Tevil
le Road be now? Hundreds of independently owned shops are closing every week and now Worthing is adding to that statistic — well done, Worthing council.
I am proud to say I have not shopped in Tesco for well over a year now and never intend to again (nor Sainsbury's since they dug up Lyons Farm).
As a result, I have saved £100s by using the farmers' markets and local independent shops.
I spent my first day on my new market stall in Worthing town centre and within 100 metres of my pitch were five empty shops (four of them next to each other).
Worthing is already a clone town so I try to avoid the town centre, especially since it has been devastated by NCP, and prefer to shop at Shoreham.
How much further will the council go before they eventually drive everyone away?
