Cost of car parking takes some beating

THE ARROGANCE of NCP in their attitude towards, and treatment of, the motorists of Worthing, simply beggars belief (and, as a non-driver, I have no personal axe to grind here).
The report in the Herald reveals the massive increase in parking charges at the Teville Gate car park.

Read the report about the increased car parking charges here.

Yet an NCP spokeswoman is quoted saying that "the new daily rate was still well below market standards".

As the Herald's letters page attests every week, those "market standards" in Worthing are scandalously high.

Who sets those standards? NCP themselves.

For hundreds of years in this country we have followed the legal principle of "innocent until proven guilty".

Yet the usual response from NCP when faced with protests about parking tickets is to state that "a motorist can always appeal if he/she feels the parking ticket is not justified".

In other words, "guilty until proven innocent".

It really takes some nerve to overturn hundreds of years of legal precedent in that way.

NCP is a profit making organisation
I blame the council for handing parking over to NCP in such a lousy lousy contract
It must rank up there with the london council that sold 3 cemeterys for 15p to a developer who then sold it on for millions
We get nothing, NCP gets loadsamoney, and the council get a dying town centre

Can't disagree with username 'toomy' above. On the plus side of this hash-up though, it looks like the council are trying to offset the worst effects of this NCP contract. I copied this off the tories website.

I think the parking costs at Teville Gate are good value. I am sure the "market standards" referred to mean other towns. Where else do you get to park all day for £3? You even get discounts on that for long term tickets.

In the rst of the town, parking is controilled by NSL, not NCP as Mr Henderson thinks. If you don't want a ticket - learn to park! Simple.

The Herald just ramps up this story to sell copies. It's boring now.

leffe999, I think you're insulting a lot of people when you say "learn to park" in regards to this matter.

There are a handful of free sites for temporary parking (1 or 2 hours) in the town - everything else is only available at a high price which has been driving people out of the town centre for several years now.

Having worked in retail in the town centre, I've seen first hand the closing of stores due to lack of trade and revenue. I've heard the complaints of many who (with no prompting from myself) exclaimed their shock at the cost of parking.

Sorry if you find it boring, the Herald may well hype the issue. But the predicament is as relevant and real today as it has been in the past. Just because a newspaper plays on the feelings of the public to sell copies doesn't mean that the issue at hand doesn't need solving.

Ask the Liberal Democrats, they put the NCP parking contract together - see link

I think the Herald is getting desperate for stories !

Alex Kal,

Well that points the blame nicely, but that's all that ever seems to happen in this town. A big fat "whose fault was it" circle with everyone pointing the finger.

And while this continues, the public pays and life goes on. The NCP folks can retire happy. The Lib Dems can retire happy - having taken their cut. No doubt some Conservatives can retire happy as well. The town on the other hand will be gutted, deserted and all major trade will be through industrial estates and Brighton. Oh, and Tescos will no doubt survive as well.

I can't argue with that A K !

Alex, sorry if you find it insulting for me to suggest that some people learn to park. One can only insult intelligence, but not stupidity. You stick to your point about NSL closing shops so please explain how Woolworths closed, for example. And then please expand your argument and tell us all why the Woolworths branch in town now has a new tenant, but not the branch in Broadwater where NSL are hardly seen.

For those of you who take their news exclusively from the Herald, this is from the Argus

After reading the Argus story that username Leffe999 put a link in for, this Council should now be congratulated and not tied in with the blame you described in your earlier posting. It's only become a 'blame' culture because it was run so badly prior to 2004 and the council is having to continually defend itself against justifiable public criticism.
