LAST week we heard confirmation that all three West Sussex hospitals will retain accident and emergency, though only St Richard's or Worthing hospitals will become a major general hospital involving a downgrading of the other.
This is progress on the original proposals although the devil will be in the detail. In June, we will hear whether it is to be Worthing or St Richard's which is to be the county's major hospital, where maternity and other services will be located. That will be the real clincher and important discussions are carrying on behind the scenes where KWASH clinicians are playing a key role.

Can I remind everybody that the option to retain accident and emergency at all hospitals was not even considered in the original consultation exercise?

Yet option three that the PCT have now agreed to scored more highly than all the other proposals on offer put together.

This would not have happened if it had not been for the fantastic unity and fighting spirit shown by all those who supported the KWASH campaign and I am immensely grateful and proud for that.

The next few weeks will be critical.

Tim Loughton
East Worthing and Shoreham MP
