SO the police need a "gravity factor chart" to tell them how to act against a criminal.
How about plain old fashioned simple common sense?

Or is that too difficult for them?

Certainly, some cases are best dealt with by cautions.

Mostly with younger offenders who have stepped onto the wrong path and need a chance stepping back
again.

But the woman who caused £1,000 damage (Herald, last week) was touching middle age and should be setting examples to those younger people.

Being drunk is no excuse.

In fact, it is a factor to make her punishment greater.

If you are going to drink, and I certainly do, then you bear the responsibility of managing your own intoxication.

At the very least, the police should have considered a direction to give Mr Dearnley, the victim, an opportunity for remuneration.

Oh, by the way Sgt Bowman, is it okay if I kick in the police station windows whenever I have personal problems?

If it is, see you soon.

Very soon.
