I, FOR one,do not want free bus passes to start at 9am and I'd be happy to pay extra council tax to cover it!
It is a good idea that these passes are restricted to start at 9:30am.
The buses before this time are nearly always full with commuters travelling to work and services, particularly the 700, could not cope with the extra passengers, especially whe
n some of the buses are single deckers.
These restrictions do not go far enough.
They should also cover the commuter period in the evenings when us weary workers are travelling home and would like to sit down i.e., between 4pm –and 6pm.
The buses at these times are always full, with only standing room available from the Shoreham area, where quite a few workers get on the bus.
I nearly always end up standing from Shoreham to Worthing after having spent most of the day on my feet.
I have been brought up to respect the older generation and do not mind giving up my seat to someone who I consider is unable to stand for very long.
Unfortunately, there are those who are quiet capable of standing but consider that they have priority over me to sit.
These people are usually the ones who refuse to give up a seat in the pushchair area when a mother with young children wishes to board the bus and I have witnessed on several occasions these mothers having to wait in the cold or wet for the next bus to come along.
Another example of their selfishness is that at the bus stops in South Street, Worthing, outside Beales, they choose to queue across the pavement instead of along the bus shelter, effectively blocking the path of shoppers.
Also, having overheard many a conversation on my travels, it is obvious that some seem to use the bus service as free entertainment rather than for the purpose of travelling for a valid reason. This becomes more prevalent when the weather is bad.
These ungrateful freebie travellers are beginning to cause resentment with fare- paying passengers.
