MY family and I went swimming at the Aquarena last week, only to be informed that, yet again, the main pool was closed due to "technical problems".
I enquired as to the reasons why and a member of staff confirmed that a section of lighting had come crashing down into the pool!

We were admitted into the children's pool and I took this time to study the current state of the ceiling.

It's fair to say that the swimming pool has had its problems over the years – when I looked up at the ceiling it resembled a patchwork quilt!

It is exactly the same with the Worthing Leisure Centre and when you enter these two main municipal sports centres it's a real throwback to the 70s – our very own edition of the TV programme "Life on Mars".

As we are the biggest town in West Sussex, it amazes me that when I go to other towns such as Steyning, Burgess Hill, Littlehampton and Horsham they all seem to have modern facilities.

Don't get me wrong, I love my town and I am proud to live here but I thought the larger the population, the greater the spending power.

It does not appear to apply in this instance.

I personally feel that the seemingly "right wing" approach of our council is becoming more and more transparent each year, and I wonder how many of the powers-that-be have membership to the private gyms in this town, dissolving any real interest in the public facilties so desperately needed to promote health and family leisure opportunities.

Now is the time for our council to really make their mark and "splash the cash" on a development (at Teville Gate?) for the whole town to be proud of, and visitors to wonder at and covet.

Worthing town must not sink in Sussex... but swim!
