I AM sad to learn of the death of famous actor Hugh Lloyd who has sadly died at the age of 85 (Worthing Herald, July 17).
Hugh starred as Tony Hancock's sidekick in the classic Hancock's Half Hour as well as many other roles, including, most recently, alongside Martin Clunes in Doc Martin.
He drew inspiration from his boyhood hero Stan Laurel to play many comedy rol
es for which he has always been widely known as a funnyman.
Actor Sir Anthony Hopkins ranked Hugh among comedy legends such as Tony Hancock, Tommy Cooper, Morecambe and Wise, Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy. These were all great comics.
He did, however, play many straight roles during his long acting career.
Hugh described Worthing as an up-and-coming town, loving the shopping centre as well as the people.
I am sure that all in Worthing will miss him for the great contribution to acting over the years and the campaigning both he and Shân did for important issues affecting the town and its residents.
Very sad loss for the town and all who knew and met him.
