I READ with great interest Freddie Feest's excellent article in the Worthing Herald of April 3 concerning Emily Davison and her struggle for justice.
Click here to read the original piece by Freddie Feest May I add a short postscript which may be of interest.
My grandfather, Police Constable Samuel Eady of the Metropolitan Police, was the main witness standing on duty at Epsom on June 4, 1913, directly opposite where Emily Davison ran in front of the King's horse and he saw her get under the fence, run onto the track, face the horses and extend her arms towards them.
She had pinned on the inside of her jacket two large suffragette flags and was in possession of the grand sum of three shillings and eightpence three-farthings, together with a return ticket to Victoria Station.
There was some speculation that she did not intend to commit suicide because of that ticket, but she was an intelligent lady who I am sure must have realised the consequences of her actions.
