West Street rat run

WHILST I sympathise greatly with anyone who has to put up with traffic constantly going up and down the road outside their house, I have to admit that I always use West Street to travel to Worthing because of the terrible mess Lyons Farm is to get through.
Over the past years many traffic schemes have been implemented and I think each has failed to ease the situation.

To my mind, it would be better to remove all obstructions from West Street, such as the green parking bays that stick out into the r
oad to allow pedestrians to walk through, and allow the street to flow again.

There are very few regular pedestrians that use the street and I am sure they would be safer if the drivers were able to simply pass through the village without having to look out for the hazards that are trying to govern them.

Finally, I have to point out that West Street is a public highway and not a private road, so any of us who choose to drive through it have a perfect right to do so.

I live in Sompting and also suffer from heavy traffic (and noisy traffic from young people who use our road as a rat run) but I know there is nothing that can be done.

Why should one street be treated any differently to another?

There are many, many rat runs in Lancing; Crabtree Lane, Grinstead Lane, Boundstone Lane, Sompting Road, Western Road plus many others.

West Street is unfortunately just another of them but at least the traffic has to proceed a lot slower than it does where I live.

Be thankful for that small mercy.

M Peacock
Sompting
