LESS THAN a fortnight away from the start of their new league season on August 16, Worthing Football Club are still deliberating over their final squad to start the campaign.
After winning 2-1 at Chichester on Tuesday, they were desperately trying to find opposition for next Tuesday after meeting Ryman Premier League co-ground sharers Horsham at Lancing's Culver Road tomorrow (Friday, 7.45pm, note change of venue).
Ala
n Pook said: "With no Reserves team this season (owing to groundshare usage restrictions] I've got to ensure we've got the right 16 or 18 squad players. We're still in the market for a couple more new ones and I need to watch players on trial as much as I can before we finally decide.
"Our team against Horsham will be much closer to the one we'll start with."
County League sides will have begun their programme this Saturday, so Tuesday may instead have to be a refereed practice match between the knowns and the triallists, said Pook.
Worthing notched an unexpected 3-2 victory over Bognor Regis Town on Friday with a hat-trick by County League leading scorer with champions Crowborough Athletic, Ross Treleaven, who was lent to Worthing by Eastbourne Borough.
But it was probably the worst thing that could have happened for a Rebels recruitment operation on the brink of maybe a masterstroke signing: Treleaven's quality was quite comfortably dispensed on Conference opposition.
Click here for Steve Bailey's match report. Rebels would like Portuguese forward or winger George Lopez, and utility player Carl Stockwell, now that, in Pook's words, ex-Havant left-back Justin Gregory's demands exceed Worthing's finances.
