THE 10th anniversary of an event to remember and celebrate the life of Andrew McNamara brought more than 120 golfers to Ham Manor on Bank Holiday Monday.
The annual golf day in memory of "Mac" raises proceeds for the Graham Holton Junior Bursary Fund, which was a particular wish of McNamara, the assistant professional at Ham Manor for five years before his death, from cancer, in 1998 at 26. He was previously assistant to Stephen Rolley at Worthing Golf Club.
Andrew's father, Mike, has played all 10 events and this year, accompanied by his wife Margaret and Andrew's twin brothers, the leading local cyclists, Chris and Simon, he spoke, then presented the trophy.
Andrew McNamara had made a special impression on one of his golf pupils, Des Lynam. The TV celebrity had written to Mac's parents: "Having spent a lifetime meeting people in the world of sport, I can honestly tell you that I have never met a more impressive young man than Andrew.
"He bore his illness with more courage than anyone has a right to expect, and, in doing so, gave us all a lesson in how we might hope to behave when the going gets really tough. I feel privileged to have known him and am so stunned by his early passing."
