IT WASN'T a classic in any sense of the word on Saturday, and it would be easily forgotten but for the fact it was our first win in the league so far — and therefore the club's first-ever win in the National Leagues.
In fact, the game was pretty poor, as was our performance in parts.
Neither of which was helped by the gale-force wind, or by us arriving only 45 minutes before kick-off, which was mainly due to some rather average navigating and a dodgy sat nav.
This does seem to be a recurring theme of our coach trips so far this season.
After all of these distractions, it would have been easy to make excuses and accept yet another defeat — and with 12 minutes to go at 20-13 down it seemed the likely outcome. However, as I mentioned last week, we needed to dig deep and front-up and that's exactly what we did.
It was fantastic to see the boys play with passion and pride, but also, more importantly, intelligence and common sense.
We were able to pressurise Chinnor into mistakes which enabled us to score three late tries, therefore securing us a bonus point (you gain one bonus point if you score four or more tries) on top of the four points we gained for the win. This resulted in us jumping clear of the foot of the table.
Psychologically that means so much, and there was talk of us being only a point off mid-table obscurity. And, if I'm honest, I would rather be there than battling relegation all season.
- We have spent the last few weeks putting together patterns of play and a game plan that is beginning to become both appropriate and effective.
The previous two weeks have shown that all this hard work is beginning to bear fruit. As a squad we must continue to buy into and continue to develop our own style of play.
On Saturday, our line-out and scrummage were both effective, and credit must go to the front five who work hard to make these an important weapon in our armoury, which will be vital as the season progresses.
This week we have Bridgwater & Albion at home. On their previous visit to us, it was the play-offs four years ago when they clawed back a 13-point deficit to win promotion to National Three. That shattered many of our dreams at the time.
Obviously, many things have changed since then. Many players have come and gone for both sides, and now we must continue to improve and hopefully take the opportunity of a home match to earn another four points, and even possibly five, on Saturday.
Success and survival in this league is all about consistency and winning your home games. Our victory on Saturday has hopefully started a new habit, the winning habit.
We must now build on that feeling and success, and focus it to, hopefully, our second victory of our league campaign so far.
