WORTHING Football Club lost their final league game of the season at home to Ashford on Saturday, and will now travel to Tooting in the play-offs.
That match is on Tuesday with a 7.45pm kick-off.
But had Rebels won they would have finished fourth, above Met Police, who lost 2-0 at home to Dulwich. Police will travel to Cray Wanderers in their play-offs semi-final on Wednesday.
Worthing joint-manager Alan Pook said afterwards: "We knew we'd probably have had to play Tooting and Cray in the play-offs anyway, if we are to go up."
On the game, Pook said: "We just didn't perform. We had a few players who kept giving the ball away, and then we defended too deep after we took the lead.
"Our inexperience showed and that's why we lost, but it's better to get a performance like this out of the way now."
In a dull first-half, the only incident of note came on 19 minutes. Worthing midfielder Ben Johnson twisted his knee as his shot was blocked, and is now highly doubtful for the play-offs.
Just two minutes into the second half, Worthing went ahead. Captain Ben Andrews headed home Scott Kirkwood's cross at the far post for his 19th goal of the season.
Within four minutes, Ashford could have equalised but Worthing keeper Rikki Banks brilliantly denied Mark Lovell.
Ashford dominated possession in the second half, and it was no real surprise when they equalised on 76 minutes. Lee Hockey tapped home Ryan Briggs' corner at the back post.
Then, in the final minute, Ashford took all three points. Lovell flicked a left-wing cross goalwards, and Joe Keehan, trying to clear, could only slice the ball into his own net.
WORTHING: Banks; Benn, Axten, Alexander, Keehan; Hughes, Kirkwood, Akehurst, Johnson; Brotherton, Andrews. Subs: Pulling (Johnson 23), R.Pook (Hughes 73 hamstring precaution), Rogers, Hancock, Farmer.
