SAVE Titnore Woods campaigners staged a sit-down protest at the Durrington branch of Tesco, today.
Approximately 20 protesters staged the protest picnic at the building site of the new Tesco Extra, and manned an information stall outside the existing branch of the supermarket from 1pm this afternoon (Tuesday, September 22).

Police officers were called to the peaceful protest which was treated with good humour by both sides.

Read more about the protest in the Worthing Herald on Thursday, September 24.

What local authority can ignore opposition that strong?

LOL.

I agree with everything Jon said. Durrington needs a wildlife haven and recreational areas to be proud of not more housing. What about facilities for young people in the area? Will Tesco/developers contribute to creating say a skating/biking facility? Are public leisure facilities included in all these plans?

What should concern every one of us is the way Worthing councillors felt powerless to stop the new Tesco store. This follows the recent Tesco application near Bognor
see http://www.westsussextoday.co.uk/bognor-news/Back-our-Felpham-store-or.5486993.jp - 51k)
when the supermarket bully warned councillors that if they refused the application they, Tesco, would appeal to the Planning Inspectorate to overturn the decision and would also seek an award for cost. Warning that the cost to council taxpayers would be well over £10,000.

Clearly Tesco is too powerful and a serious threat to democracy. Nothing less than a government inquiry is needed now! What say you Mr Bottomley?

Steve Norton's comment that suggest that 20 people doesn't seem a lot of local support, but what he doesn't realise that petitions and letters to the council have been sent in to them with a few thousand registering in the past few years. Also presently there are approximately 600 names on the no.10 Downing Street web-site petition which closes in a few weeks time. Therefore I urge anyone to sign this petition.

The address of the petition is

and as it ends 9 October 2009 please sign today
Many thanks
