AN elderly couple had a "lucky escape" after a fire broke out in the kitchen of their Goring bungalow.
Firefighters were called to Wadhurst Drive at 1.40pm yesterday (Thursday, July 17) where they found smoke pouring from the kitchen.
The residents, an elderly couple, had managed to get outside and had called the fire service thanks to a working fire alarm.
Firefighter Maisie Rudkin, from Worthing Bluewatch, said: "A pan on the hob with cooking oil in it had ignited an oven glove.
"It caused thick, black smoke which filled the kitchen.
"Luckily the couple noticed the smoke and had an alarm which probably save them from any injuries.
WThey had a very lucky escape.
"We would urge people not to leave cooking unattended and to make sure they have a smoke detector installed and working."
The fire, which is being treated as accidental, caused smoke damaged throughout the bungalow.
The couple were not injured but were upset and shaken.
