DURRINGTON residents are looking forward to using a larger community centre when a replacement building is provided on the edge of the new Tesco Extra site.
A planning application for the new £1.5million building is being discussed by Worthing Borough Council on Tuesday, March 8.
The present centre will be demolished for the site to become part of an enlarged car park to serve the new superstore, which was due to open at 8am this morning.
Centre manager Jackie Tettersell said: "We will have a second hall, which will be nice, and we will be on a better site on the main road, rather than in a corner as at present.
"We are looking forward to moving in."
More spaceThe new centre, funded by Tesco, will provide 700 square metres of space, compared with the present 400, and the large hall will be complemented by a smaller one.
There will also be a lounge, kitchen and ancillary accommodation, plus easy pedestrian access from Romany Road.
Vehicular access will be via the new Tesco car park.
A 2.4metre-high security fence will help deter vandals entering the site, and the building's design includes overhanging eaves to prevent easy access onto the roof.
