SUNDAY will be the last trading day for Tesco's ageing West Durrington supermarket - three weeks before the company opens its giant Tesco Extra next to the present site.
Opening day for the new outlet will be Thursday, February 25, and from 8am, shoppers are promised a whole new shopping experience.

New departments will include a pharmacy, opticians, bike shop, phone shop, plus improved sections for clothing and electricals.

Some of the businesses which have operated from shops next to the present store will be moving onto the new complex.

This could include the recently closed Marie Curie Cancer charity shop, which Tesco said this week has now been offered a unit.

24-hour alcohol

A new community centre will also be part of the Tesco Extra development.

The new store will be open 24 hours a day, and among the more controversial aspects of the new store is the granting of a licence to sell alcohol round the clock.

Worthing licensing councillors gave the go-ahead for 24-hour alcohol sales, subject to several conditions.

These include that a personal licence holder must be on-site at all times the store is open, and there must be CCTV cameras covering all areas where alcohol is kept and sold. And the CCTV records must be retained for not less than 28 days.

Sussex Police did not object to the licence application, but they insisted that several measures be introduced to prevent public nuisance and to protect children from harm.

Not fooled by Hazel,

Not in Tosco's 05/02/2010 15:56:17
So Tosco's gets to open 24 hours despite the original plans not allowing that?

And now it gets 'booze around the clock'!

Something stinks here, but there is a solution...in the couple of weeks that they don't have a store open find somewhere else nicer/cheaper to shop. Such places do exist, so let's hope this 'extra' monstrosity rots into the fields it has destroyed!

Quite right. I was at the council meeting when the monster was approved. In the documents that were handed out it clearly states on page 33 that opening times would be the same as the original store, NOT 24/7. So what going on, I demand answers!!

I would email the council and find out where and when the decision was made.

It's not the 24/7 aspect I'm perturbed by (Sorry, but Worthing has nothing at these late hours, petrol in particular, alright if you work 9-5 but useless if your hours vary) -- but this 24/7 booze license...

It would be interesting to know what arguments secured this agreement.

Confirmed (see: http://www.worthingherald.co.uk/worthing/Job-rush-as-2000-apply.6058153.jp). Tesco will only open from 6am to midnight, Monday to Saturday, and 11am to 5pm on Sunday, with alcohol sales included in these hours. So no 24hr booze cruise, but keep an eye on any planning application to extend opening hours.

Worthing town already has a problem with drunken yobs and now the council in it's wisdom has now made it much easier for these yobs to get hold of even more alcohol. A once green part of Worthing has now been ruined by concrete. Future generations will not have green fields to play on but they will have booze available to them 24/7 when they get bored.

Mum1...That is exactly what people like Keen-Observer (Is that the best misnomer ever!) fail to understand..it appears that as long as they can get their regular 'hits' of 'retail therapy', they don't give a t*ss about what is being destroyed in the process!

Why on earth are people complaining about this 24 hour booze license ?

Why not complain to the Worthing Borough Council licensing Committee ?

http://www.worthing.gov.uk/your-council/decision-makingagendasreportsminutes/licensingcontrolcommittee/

One of your own (Lib-Dem) Councillors sits on that Committee.
