ARSONISTS have torched a 20-metre high pile of wood on Worthing seafront.
Firefighters were called to the seafront at Marine Parade shortly after 2.30am today (Sunday).

All the wood washed ashore from the Ice Prince had been broken down in to smaller piles of timber and the firefighters concentrated their efforts on preventing the fire spreading to adjacent wood piles and nearby beach huts.

The fire crews were helped by an offshore breeze which reduced the threat of the fire spreading, used seven firefighting jets and were assisted by a contractor using a mechanical digger to break up the wood pile.

The fire is being treated as arson, and Incident Commander Dave Howells asked for anyone with information to contact police.

"Although this might be seen as just a large bonfire on a beach, it has tied up our resources for several hours when they could have been needed elsewhere for a more life-threatening emergency," he said.

The burning pile has now been reduced to roughly 25 per cent of its original size, but is likely to continue burning for a few more hours before it is finally extinguished.

Part of me is not surprised this has happened, but the idiocy of the arsonists is beyond comprehension. I doubt they would have given the welfare of others a second thought.
And this happening on the night when Sussex fire crews were stretched tackling a blaze at the Grand Hotel too.

Well, well here's a surprise !Who would have guessed this would happen ?

Whilst I agree it was a foolhardy thing to do it was only a matter of time and unless somebody get's their finger out to shift all this timber,I don't doubt it will happen again.

Is it not worth considering bulldozering ALL the wood to the sand at low tide and burning it? perhaps teh council could thow in some fireworks with the money saved on the labour, portacabins etc... Throw a bit of a Worthing Wood-fest? Surely the job would be done in less than 12 hours and the tide would wash away the ash ( or it could be dug and removed in one lorry load) And we could all have a jolly good impromtu party as well.... How much money is involved in this 'clear up operation' ? How many people are being payrolled to do this?
Whilst I agree setting fire to the wood where it stands is irresponsible and extremely thoughtless.... the amount of time and money involved in picking it all up and taking it somewhere else only to burn it seems crazy.
I say let the people of Worthing help themselves - almost certainly the whole beach would be cleared in a matter of a few hours and we'd all have some fabulous decking and some lovely warm fires to sit in front of !

If the 'arson' of a pile of smashed wood on the beach is such a problem, why did they not simply allow the public to salvage the wood in the first place? The greed and idiocy of those involved is staggering. The waste of public resources was perpetrated by those who tried to prevent the wood being cleared away for free and put to good use, not by the 'arsonists'.
