TWO men are in police custody today (Thursday, February 25) after they were arrested at the opening of the new Tesco Extra store in Durrington.
A 32-year-old man from Patching was arrested on suspicion of affray and a 28-year-old man from London was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence outside the store in New Road.

They remain in police custody at Worthing this afternoon awaiting questioning.

Protestors arrived for the official opening of the store at 10am and were removed by Tesco security staff by 10.45am.

They continued their protest on the road outside and dispersed shortly before noon.

One man used a D-lock to attach himself to a row of trolleys.

I'm one of the few people who is quite happy with the new TescoExtra but I'm afraid there will be more arrests due to road rage!!!! The roads around the new store are always now snarled up with nose to bumper vehicles...even when the project is fully completed I don't think this will improve the traffic jams! Please sort this out now Tesco it's taking me forever to get to and from work

I am no lover of Tesco but don't blame Tesco. I am also no tree hugger but increased traffic was always going to be a major issue and the buck must surely fall fairly and squarely at the door of those who gave planning permission. There is no way that building should have commenced until the infrastructure was in place. Any fool could see that ... or maybe not. Clearly not all fools are equal, some are more foolish than others (with apologies to George Orwell).
