A PATIENT suffering from heart disease underwent a new procedure being carried out at Worthing Hospital's catheter laboratory.
It has taken delivery of a new ultrasound machine which enables doctors to get a 360-degree view of the arterial wall from the inside.

The ultrasound travels through the arteries and heart like a submarine giving the doctor a more accurate assessment than is possible with angiography.

Richard Davies, 61, from Shoreham, had already suffered a heart attack and had a stent put into one of his narrowed arteries to keep it open to improve the blood flow.

During the procedure consultant cardiologist Nick Pegge inserted another stent into one of Mr Davies' arteries which had narrowed.

He said: "It is more accurate and sophisticated than angiography giving images highlighting the artery walls and showing any cholesterol and fat deposits."

Worthing Hospital's cardiac department remains the only unit in West Sussex where angioplasty, stenting and defibrillator implants are carried out.
