Worthing's winter wonderland

WORTHING briefly became a winter wonderland on Sunday as thick snow covered the town.
A small scattering of snowflakes at 9am turned into a thick blizzard 15 minutes later which, while living up to weather experts' predictions, stunned many with its ferocity.

Families wasted no time in taking advantage of the unseasonal weather, with sleds being dusted off and put to use in parks across Worthing.

As the blizzard settled an eiderdown of white across the town, some acted as any self-respecting residents of a seaside resort would and, with temperatures heading towards freezing, they headed for the beach.

By noon, the shoreline was dotted at irregular intervals by snowmen of varying size and quality as tourists and locals alike posed for pictures in the unseasonal snow.

As the thaw set in, the fire service urged people to drive with caution and not take risks.

Fifefighter Shaun Jackaman from Worthing Fire Station said: "We are recommending people only go out if they need to for essential journeys. Drive safely and ensure the car and visibility is clear."

Herald chief photographer Stephen Goodger took a selection of photographs of the local snow. See Thursday's Worthing Herald for more pictures.
