Arun Young Musicians Concert – The Barn, Dover House, Arundel – Sunday 6th July 2014

In November, young musicians from our area will again compete for the prestigious title, Arun Young Musician 2014. This year sees the 33rd in a series which began in 1981 and continues with the sterling support of its founders, Littlehampton Rotary Club. Several past competitors are now seasoned professional musicians whilst others still enjoy music-making as a rewarding pastime/social activity.

Apart from the competitive element, AYM’s ethos is to promote and encourage young musicians in the art of public performance and the annual concert, held in Lady Sarah Clutton’s delightful Dover House Barn, provides a wonderful opportunity to display their talents in friendly, informal, atmosphere. There is no adjudicator, just an enthusiastic and highly appreciative audience who are there for the delight and sheer privilege of listening to these outstanding young performers.

This year’s concert featured 8 previous entrants with ages ranging from 10 to 24 years, introduced to us, once again, by George Jones, Musical Director of The Angmering Chorale.

We enjoyed a veritable feast of music, some of which was related the World War I era, accompanied, during the interval, by an equally flavoursome buffet which had been lovingly prepared by the Rotary Club’s ladies. All of the performers acquitted themselves superbly and, in each half of the concert, we savoured readings of poems inspired by World War I and delivered impeccably by Sue Arthur and Jenny Greig from Voice of Progress which provides talking newspapers for the Blind. Piano accompanists Marilyn Dennis and Birgit Rohowska contributed magnificently throughout the afternoon and a special presentation was made to Marilyn who has recently retired from her official role with the organisation.
