Spokeswoman Vicky Pateman said: “At the moment we have 22 members, which sounds a lot, but we always want more. Members come from Brighton, Lancing, Haywards Heath, Lewes, Seaford and the ages range from 18 to 65. Some have been in the band for 25 years, and some of our newest members have only recently moved to the area. So it is a real mix! The band practise every Monday for a couple of hours, and sometimes we go for a quick pint after. We’re a social lot!

“As for the music, a good starting point would be to watch the movie Brassed Off to get an idea of the type of music!

“We play all sorts from more classical pieces to a Queen medley, it really depends on the event.

“One we all loved playing, and the crowd seemed to love, was Journal of Phileas Fogg by Peter Graham, here is us playing it.....https://soundcloud.com/christianchadwick/the-journal-of-phileas-fogg-peter-graham-brighton-hove-city-brass-at-lsc-areas-2016

“Some of the events the band have played include the Brighton Marathon, Christmas carols at The Westbourne in Hove, 1821 Fireworks at Eastbourne Bandstand, Littlehampton fireworks, Remembrance Day, Sevenoaks bandstand, Pavilion Gardens and studio sessions with British Sea Power

“Every year there are different competitions that are regional and national. We’ve just come back from Butlin’s Mineworkers Open National Brass Band Festival 2016 in Skegness and we are now preparing for London & Southern Counties Regional Competition in Stevenage. We actually came second in the fourth section last year which means this year the band have been promoted up a to the third section nationally. Wish us luck!

“I guess everyone in the band just loves music, whether it’s pop, indie or oompah bands and of course brass!

“Whether we are playing at competitions or events, it’s just a fun atmosphere and no pressure.

“Anyone can join, whether it’s someone who is new to playing an instrument or someone that used to play and wants to try again.

“Of course for competitions we need a strong group, but for practice, well, the more the merrier. We also welcome juniors... the brass banners of the future! Above all, it’s about feeling part of a community and it’s super social.”

The band was formed as a school band in 1975, then as players left the school it reformed in the town as a community band rehearsing at a primary school hall in Coombe Road, Brighton.
