The Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra - Brighton Dome

The Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra reverted to their more usual format for the annual New Year’s Eve Viennese concert at the Dome, with guest conductor Stephen Bell returning to the podium after a two-year break.

The highly regarded younger member of the British conducting set once again delivered some excellent festive jokes in his usual easy style and this time also had to take time out to introduce the pieces being played.

Most of the traditional favourites were included, featuring various members of the superb BPO under guest leader Matthew Scrivener.

Soprano Pamela Hay offered the vocal interest and her expressive rendition of the Laughing Song from Die Fledermaus went down particularly well with a packed house.

The BPO start the second half of their 88th season on Sunday January 13 with a programme featuring Rob Clark and Kate Shipway playing Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos.

BPO musical director Barry Wordsworth takes up the baton once more to lead the orchestra through Verdi’s Prelude and Triumphal March from Aida plus the Saint-Saens Symphony No 3 featuring Alistair Young on the organ.
