CLASSICAL CONCERT: Angmering Chorale with Sinfonia of Arun at Arundel Cathedral

THE Angmering Chorale will be offering The Best of British Music at Arundel Cathedral on Saturday, November 20, at 7.30pm.

Spokeswoman Sheila Thomas said: “With Sinfonia of Arun and soloists Sara Redgwick (soprano) and Simon Lobelson (baritone) all under the baton of the Chorale’s MD George Jones, a memorable evening is promised.”

At the end of October, members of The Angmering Chorale travelled to Leicester where, with Billingshurst Choral Society, they joined the Leicester Philharmonic Choir in a celebration of its 125th anniversary.

With the Philharmonia Orchestra under the baton of Brian Kay, they performed several well-known items followed by Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man – A Mass For Peace, conducted by the composer, who is Angmering’s patron.

Sheila said: “Fresh from the success of the visit, the chorale is now nearing the end of rehearsals for its autumn concert, a celebration of all that is Best of British.

“Works to be performed are Gloria by Karl Jenkins, its first amateur performance in the area, Magnificat by John Rutter and Eternal Light by Howard Goodall.

“Gloria is a highly-dramatic work with the sounds of ethnic and thirdworld cultures very much in evidence. With Karl Jenkins being named as the most-performed composer in the world today, this brand-new work coincides with the

Queen awarding him the CBE for services to music.

“Rutter’s Magnificat had its première at Carnegie Hall in May, 1990, and although it could not be called a Christmastide piece, it has a musical energy and rhythm which has a wonderfully festive spirit.

“Goodall, whose TV and film themes are many and varied, is a prodigious writer of choral music.

His Eternal Light, a requiem, is viewed as a contemporary classic and is one of the most-performed requiems in Britain, earning the composer a Classical Brit Award in 2009.”

Tickets £12.50 (unreserved) may be obtained from Jan Wood (01243 544501), Holmes & Co, Angmering, Ronald Edwards, Rustington, or members of the choir.
