There was not a soggy bottom in sight for Littlehampton’s star baker on this week’s episode of the Great British Bake Off.

Lottie Bedlow, 31, made it through pastry week on last night’s show (October 20), having almost gone home in the previous episode.

For the first challenge, bakers had to make their own version of a pasty. Lottie opted for what she named ‘toad-in-the-holeless’ pasties, featuring – you guessed it – sausages, gravy, and mashed potato, wrapped up in a rough puff pastry shell and served in toad-shaped plates.

Judge Prue Leith was skeptical of the concept, fearing it could be soggy. She said: “I have hope... if not faith.” Lottie quipped: “I’ll take that. Home probably, but I’m still going to take it.”

She proved Prue wrong however, with both her and Paul Hollywood raving about the flavours, if not the appearance, of the pasties.

Lottie came fourth in the technical challenge, which saw the bakers making salted caramel and raspberry-flavoured eclairs. Her choux pastry was impressive, but she was let down by her crème pâtissière’s texture.

For the showstopper – a sweet tart topped with a pastry cage – Lottie’s pyramid was praised by the judges but her Apple Tree tart beneath divided opinion, with the judges once again loving the flavour but not the look of the ‘tart’, which had no sides.
