FILM: Damsels in Distress (12A)

It has been 14 years since writer-director Whit Stillman refracted his rose-tinted memories of infamous New York nightclub Studio 54 in the acclaimed drama The Last Days Of Disco.

The indie auteur returns with this whimsical comedy about three self-obsessed college students, Violet (Greta Gerwig), Heather (Carrie MacLemore) and Rose (Megalyn Echikunwoke), who do more harm than good with a campus-based counselling service for depressed fellow undergraduates.

The plucky trio take well-adjusted new girl Lily (Analeigh Tipton) under their wing and slowly but surely they warp her perspective on life, convincing Lily that the only way to stand out from the crowd is to be part of their crowd.

Released: April 27 (UK & Ireland, selected cinemas), 99 mins
