FILM: Knuckle (15)

Film-maker Ian Palmer spent 12 years following two families of Irish travellers - the Quinn McDonagh and the Joyce clans - whose animosity goes back generations.

They settle differences through bare-knuckle fights in country lanes, the victor of each bruising encounter declared the winner of a particular argument. James Quinn McDonagh is the leader of his family and is undefeated but he has grown tired of all the violence so he prepares to relinquish control to his younger brother, Michael, who is still smarting from a bruising encounter many years earlier with rival Paul Joyce. As the two men make plans for a gruelling remake, Palmer’s film meets colourful characters on both sides of the feud and celebrates the traditions of this fiercely independent and insular community.
