Film review: Hello Carter (7 out of 10)

To be honest the main strength lies in the actors, with Charlie Cox shining in this low budget British light comedy.

Cox is Carter, a man who has hit a pretty low point in his life.

He has no job, no money and he is still moping over his girlfriend who dumped him a while back.

Even his brother decides he can’t kip on his floor any more.

On his way to stay with his aunt Carter bumps into his ex’s brother who gives him a letter to hand in person to a mysterious woman.

Unfortunately at this point Carter makes an error of judgement that leads to him being chased by the police.

However, it’s this decision that is the weakest point of the film - no one in their right (or wrong) mind would do what Carter does.

But if you are happy to ignore this point the film ticks along at a reasonable pace.

Jodie Whittaker is pretty good as someone who gets drawn into Carter’s world and Judy Parfitt weighs in with a great cameo as Aunt Miriam.

The story is based on a short film released back in 2011 which also had Whittaker appearing but with Dominic Cooper as Carter.

This longer version has plenty of promise and while not an outstanding movie has enough in it to hang on to your attention.
